It’s a lot of fun,” said Scotty about the “The Car Doctors,” a show he’s been hosting for 8 years that taps a growing following of loyal listeners and has enjoyed a substantial increase in ratings, according to AC Nielsen’s audience rating system. “We’ve had a good run so far. We get live call-ins during one show with people asking questions, sharing their stories about what’s happened with their car…we just really welcome callers—love to hear their input and insight.”

Running the gamut of the automotive industry, “The Car Doctors” offers sound advice, product awareness, industry news, all peppered with fun. Its audience is comprised of folks who don’t know a lot about cars, to do-it-yourself folks, biz professionals, shop techs and more.

Scotty, who shares the airtime with his other two amigos, co-host and ace-mechanic to professional race car drivers, and Jamie of Ferrari of Denver, said the three of them think alike.

Speaking knowledgeably and engagingly, the car vets share their expertise with listeners on what they can do to their car to make it last as long as possible. “We educate people, help them understand more about their car—try to protect them from possibly getting the wrong thing done, or what they should do if something has gone wrong after the car was fixed, which happens.”

Born in Pensacola, Florida, a young Scotty moved to Denver when he was five years old. His father, who was in the Navy, was not around much and his mother took care of him and his two younger sisters.

Scotty’s interest for things that go fast was piqued in his teens. “When I was 16 or 17-years old, I was into bicycles, mini bikes, motorcycles, and when they broke, you had to fix them. And that same enthusiasm transitioned into cars.” The teenager, who married at the age of 15, said, “Money was tight. My wife and I were raising two children. So instead of going to high school, I worked as a busboy, did whatever I could do. Having someone else fix my car wasn’t an option. We couldn’t afford it. So I learned how to fix them myself.”

Working at a local Parts store for a while, Scotty eventually decided to own a mobile service. “I’d go and fix people’s cars in Metro-Denver.” From there, he took on a sales position at a local salvage yard before opening Arvada Auto Tech (www.arvadaautotech.com) in 2001.

Today, Scotty’s large customer base includes working with generations of families, something close to his heart. “We have quite a few folks that have come here, still come, and include the grandparents, their children, and their children’s children. I have watched many of my customers’ kids grow up.”

What can newcomers expect at Arvada Auto Tech? “Here, it’s not a ‘Let’s fix your car and see you later’ type of shop. We make sure to explain everything. We give people an honest repair and don’t try to upsell something they don’t need. We pride ourselves in getting it done right the first time, at a fair price.” Its customers are also reassured that the shop is ASE certified and that every car repair or maintenance service is 100% guaranteed.

“My employees know what they are doing, are very loyal, have a great attitude, show up every day, care about what they do—they treat this place as their own. And that makes a big difference.”

Away from work, Scotty is an avid coin collector, likes to watch documentaries on the History channel, and plays guitar and sings, the latter being what he calls his first passion. Having played in bands for the last 26 years, he touts his favorite music as “1980s rock because I grew up with it.” Currently his band 5280, which plays covers of ‘80s and ‘90s rock, are still fine-tuning its sound. “We haven’t played live yet, we’re just having fun jamming.” He added, winking, “But maybe we will someday.”
